Looking Back at The Dallas Cowboys Schedule:
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were on the Dallas Cowboys schedule coming into the season. They bested them 34-21 and then had the mixed pleasure/frustration of opening their new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington by losing to the New York Giants 31-33. This was a bit of a set back, however, the new $1.15 Billion stadium, which has been the talk of the League, boasted a new NFL attendance record for a single game: 105,121 fans! There were so many fans a lot of them could only view the game on TV screens in the Party Plaza.
Speaking of the New Stadium, the extremely tall, 60 yard wide video board played a bit a problem with punts in this retractable roof stadium in their home town.
That losing game for the Cowboys was a nail biter. The lead changed eight times; this running game netted 251 yards against the Giants. Tony Tomo managed three interceptions and Lawrence Tynes kicked a 37 yard field goal as the whistle blew, thus the 33-31 win for the Giants.
The Cowboys' first win in their new stadium occurred the next week against the Carolina Panthers, thanks to the 21 points in the second half that went unanswered by the Panthers and Dallas' 21-7 win showed the stadium what they had. They lost a week later, however, on the road against the Broncos. The week after that, on the Dallas Cowboys schedule, receiver Miles Austin had a 59 yard touchdown reception to give the Cowboys a 20-17 lead in the 4th quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs. The forced overtime because of Romo connecting with Austin, again, on a 60 yard TD pass gave the Cowboys their 26-20 win as they went into their bye week.
The bye week gave the Dallas Cowboys Schedule the respite they needed and won the next three games, putting Miles Austin on the pedestal. They lost the next five games as Novembers' fall turned into Decembers' colder weather. The New Orleans gave them their first 14-0 lead in the first quarter in their road match up as they looked for Austin to continue his rise in their ranks. He managed another 49 yard touchdown reception that contributed much to the winning score.
Leading 24-3 going into the 4th quarter, the Cowboys had to have a big play, defensively, when the Saints scored twice bringing Dallas's lead to 21-21. DaMarcus Ware, coming off a neck injury sacked QB Drew Brees causing a fumble as the Saints were running for a winning drive. This inspired the Cowboys to shut out the Redskins 17-0 a week later and set themselves up to win the NFC East by beating the Philadelphia Eagles in the last game of the season.
When the Dallas Cowboys schedule faced the Philadelphia Eagles, a year ago, in the same spot just to get in the playoffs, they had a different outcome. They embarrassed themselves, however, this time, they dominated the game with the second straight shutout and won with a 24-0 score. They would also get another chance at the Eagles a week later with the Wild Card selection. Michael Vick and Jeremy Maclin met in the end zone with Vick on a 76 yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. The Cowboys scored a 27 point in that quarter for a big lead going into half time. A 73 yard TD run by Felix Jones, 3rd quarter gained the Cowboys' first playoff game (34-3) in a decade or more.
The Dallas Cowboys would end their run a week later with a loss of 34-3 in a match up with the Minnesota Vikings. in the Divisional round. The cowboys had committed three turnovers and they weren't able to recover from the onslaught they faced in this Divisional round. |
